Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines [7.6]

Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines Plot Summary

Dastardly And Muttley In Their Flying Machines was a spinoff of the previous season's Wacky Races, which pitted the the drivers of the Mean Machine in World War I bi-planes in pursuit of a carrier pigeon, the patriotic Yankee Doodle Pigeon. Assisting--and often hindering--their attempts were the other components of this unit called the Vulture Squadron, the inventor Klunk and the coward Zilly.

If some of the action resembled Road Runner cartoons, it's because Michael Maltese--Chuck Jones' main writer for the Road Runner--was a writer for this show (along with Larz Bourne and Dalton Sandifer). Muttley was given a more fleshed-out personality, craving medals for either saving Dastardly from a fall or putting Zilly back in his plane.

Each half-hour was comprised of two Dastardly & Muttley cartoons, a blackout segment called Wing Dings, and a segment starring Muttley in Walter Mitty-style flights of fantasy called Magnificent Muttley. The show was sponsored by Kellogg's during its first season.

The show's original name was Stop That Pigeon (the show's theme song), and was to have featured a heavy-jowled Red Baron-type commander and an orange dachshund in pilot's goggles. Klunk and Zilly were part of the group at the time, but soon after, the Baron and the dachshund were replaced with Dick Dastardly and Muttley.
