Avatar: The Last Airbender Plot SummaryIn a lost age, the world is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Within each nation, there is a remarkable order of men and women called the "benders" who can learn to harness their inborn talent and manipulate their native element. Bending is a powerful form combining martial art and elemental magic. In each generation, only one bender is solely capable of controlling all four elements. That bender is the Avatar. The Avatar is the spirit of the world manifests in human form. When the Avatar dies, it reincarnates into the next nation in the cycle. Starting with the mastery of his or her native element, the Avatar learns to bend all four elements. Throughout the ages, the countless incarnations of the Avatar have served to keep the four nations in harmony. Then, the firebenders attacked. Just as the world needed the Avatar the most, he mysteriously vanished. A hundred years later, the Fire Nation is near final victory in its ruthless war of world domination. The Air Nomads were destroyed, the Air Temples ravished, and all airbender monks eradicated. The Water Tribes were raided and driven to the brink of extinction. The Earth Kingdom remains and fights a hopeless war against the Fire Nation. Many believe the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and the cycle is broken. In the desolated South Pole, a lone Water tribe struggles to survive. It is here that the village's last remaining waterbender Katara and her warrior brother Sokka rescue a strange 12-year-old boy named Aang who has been suspended in hibernation in an iceberg. The Water tribe soon discovers that Aang is not only an Airbender--the extinct race no one has seen in a century--but also the long lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard the child Avatar in his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation.
"Avatar: The Last Airbender is a truly unique comic adventure with rich animation and incredible martial-arts choreography. Creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino designed a fantastical Asian world with compelling characters and interesting creatures that will capture kids' imaginations and spirit."
-- Marjorie Cohn, Executive Vice President, Development and Original Programming, Nickelodeon
General Notes:
Production usually takes about $1 million and 9-10 months per episode. Because of this, the staff will often work on several different episodes at a time. The show is currently in the middle of airing its third season in the US. Talks are reportedly underway to extend the show beyond just three seasons, which was the original plan by the creators. However, if there is a fourth season, it will likely follow a different storyline other than the Fire Lord and Fire Nation trying to take over the world, as both Nick executives and the co-creators have said season three will be when Aang faces the Fire Lord.
Season 1 is titled "Book One: Water" and is currently being released in a 5 Volume set (with each Volume being released about two months apart). Season 2 is titled "Book Two: Earth." Each season contains twenty "chapters." Season 3 is titled "Book Three: Fire." This season contains 21 "chapters."

And after he died, within roughly 12 years, Sozin started a full-scale war with the rest of the world. He has a very deep voice and wears a long, dark robe with fire nation symbols on it. Roku serves as a mentor to Aang and has given him continued guidance. He, along with all the other past Avatars, has a statue of himself in the Southern Air Temple.

Monk Gyatso - Gyatso was Aang's mentor 100 years ago at the Southern Air Temple. In the episode titled "The Southern Air Temple", Aang found Gyatso's remains in a cave in the mountains nearby, and was extremely angered, triggering his Avatar spirit. Gyatso would play games and look out for Aang's welfare, but also taught him all he knows about airbending. Aang was raised for years by Gyatso, which led to a lot of bonding time, and a lot of Pai Sho.
Nation: Air
King Bumi - Bumi is the former ruler of the Earth Kingodm city of Omashu, before it was invaded by the Fire Nation. He allowed himself to get captured by the Fire Nation and allowed them to take over the city. He is a very powerful Earthbender, enough so that he can bend with his chin and face. She commands respect from even her elderly Uncle. Princess Azula is one of the most powerful firebenders alive, and can even create and bend lightning. She is a "firebending prodigy" as Zuko described her. She was named after her grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon.
Nation: Fire
Ty Lee - One of Azula's traveling buddies, Ty Lee was a young acrobat in a Fire Nation circus. However, when Princess Azula came knocking, after some resistance, she decided to join up with the Fire Nation Princess on her journey. She's not a firebender, but she is skilled in Kyusho Jitsu, the art of attacking pressure points on the body.
Nation: Fire
Mai - The daughter of the Governor of what is now New Ozai, Mai has joined Azula and Ty Lee in their search. Mai, like Ty Lee, is not a bender, but she does attack using star-like knives. This makes her yet another unique weapon on Azula's vault.

Master Yu - Master Yu is an Earthbending master and teacher. He has his own academy where he takes young Earthbenders under his wing and takes them to new levels in their bending, but for money of course. He has been hired by Lao Beifong to get Toph back after she was "captured" by the Avatar.
Nation: Earth

The Spirit World:
Beyond the Avatar world, a totally different universe, called the spirit world, exists. Inside the spirit world, the spirits can see you, but they are invisible to the human eye, as well as creatures. The Avatar is the bridge between this world and the real world, and Aang travels to it when he needs help. Here is a list of some of the spirits we have met so far:
• Koh - Koh is a giant centipede known for stealing faces of other spirits, creatures, even humans. Koh is one of the oldest spirits in the spirit world, and has a collection of hundreds of different faces he can use wherever and whenever he feels like it.
• Hei Bai - As seen in "The Spirit World (Winter Solstice, Part 1)," the Hei Bai is a giant panda bear, who apparently can change into a horrendously gigantic and powerful creature of unknown fication. Don't tick this spirit off!
• Avatar Roku & his dragon - Yes, Avatar Roku is actually a spirit. He and his giant fire-breathing dragon inhabit this world, and assist Aang when he's in need. They can either guide him in the right direction, or provide him with valuable information he can use throughout his journeys.
Some spirits have crossed over to the mortal world. Near the beginning of time, these two spirits crossed over from the spirit world in the form of koi fish, and currently swim freely in a nested pond inside the Northern Water Tribe. These are their names before they crossed over.
• Tui - Tui is the moon spirit, the spirit Princess Yue saved by sacrificing her life. It is the white koi fish with the black spot inside the oasis, which is within the Northern Water Tribe. Should it die, the world would turn totally dark during the night. Waterbenders draw their power from this spirit.
• La - The spirit of the ocean is the other fish swimming inside that oasis, the black one with the white spot on it. It is this spirit which enabled Aang to single-handedly defeat the fire nation during their attack on the Northern Water Tribe. This spirit saved the Northern Water Tribe from utter destruction, and has enabled benders like Master Pakku to head down south, and rebuild their sister tribe, the Southern Water Tribe. The water tribe greatly appreciates, and even idolizes, this spirit.
